Part of San Joaquin County, Manteca was first settled by pioneer farmers. Joshua Cowell,"the father of Manteca," crossed the plains in 1861 and settled on land that would eventually become the center of town. In 1873, the Central Pacific Railroad laid track through the middle of Cowell's farm and established, "Cowell Station." Because there was already another "Cowell Station" named after Joshua's brother, the railroad and the farmers agreed to change the name to, "Monteca." When the railroad printed the first tickets however, it misspelled the name as, "Manteca." Despite the fact that Manteca means, "lard" in Spanish, it was never corrected. Joshua Cowell became the town's first Mayor in 1918 when the town was incorporated. Agriculture remained the primary industry in Manteca and the surrounding areas until the 1970s.
